Labour Market Information

What is Labour Market Information and why is it important?

Labour Market Information (LMI) is information that provides an insight into the labour markets at different levels (district, region or nationally).

Labour Market Information (LMI) focusses on:

  • The industries that are growing and declining
  • The types and levels of job that are increasing and decreasing
  • What supply of labour is available, e.g. numbers, skills and qualification level.

Some examples of the types of information provided are:

  • Population composition
  • Skills, career and progression pathways
  • Education institutes, courses, qualifications and supporting statistics
  • Employment sectors, employers, trends and jobs
  • Jobs, training and apprenticeships.

Why does it matter?

Access to up-to-date career and Labour Market Information is important for social mobility. Information about pathways, opportunities, growth areas and alumni’s successful transitions helps to connect students to a positive future.

Providing detailed information about all pathways, relevant courses, opportunities, labour market understanding and supporting students to make useful networks strengthens students’ capacity to make informed decisions and positive transitions.
